Adopting an Existing Sewerage System
If you own or manage a private sewerage system and would like us to consider adopting it, we may be able to add it to our public sewer network.
Once adopted, we'll become responsible for maintaining the sewerage assets.
This service is typically used for older developments where sewerage assets did not automatically transfer into Welsh Water ownership. If you're building a new development, you'll need to apply through our Sewer Adoption (Section 104 process instead.
What does this service include?
Most private sewers and lateral drains transferred to water companies in 2011. However, some assets were excluded and remain privately owned. Requests to adopt existing sewerage systems are now relatively uncommon.
Where all affected property owners agree, we can consider adopting these remaining private sewerage assets.
Before we can adopt a sewerage system, we'll need to confirm that it meets the required standards. If any improvements or repairs are needed, these will need to be completed before the adoption can proceed.
How long will it take?
Timescales vary depending on the size, condition and complexity of the sewerage system.
Once we've reviewed your application, we'll provide guidance on the expected timescales and next steps.
How much does it cost?
There are two charges associated with this service:
- An inspection fee.
- A legal fee.
The charges depend on the size and complexity of the scheme and are similar to those charged for the adoption of proposed sewerage systems.
As a not-for-profit company, our charges reflect the cost of providing the service.

Things to be aware of
Any sewerage system proposed for adoption must meet the relevant design and construction standards, including the Welsh Ministers' Standards for Gravity Foul Sewers and Lateral Drains.
